Praying In Jesus Name
Jason Hopkins
1. Prayer Life Do you have one? Are you developing one?
2. Setting the tone Have you created the environment of praise and drowned out all other things?
3. Alone place Identified a place to go?
4. Types of prayer – intercession Praying for others? Church? Prayer list?
5. Lord speaks through prayer Making time to listen?
6. No substitute for prayer
7. Lord’s prayer is surrender Full surrender.
8. Holy Spirit’s role
9. Prayer kneads the heart, the heart needs prayer “Prayer changes things” It changes the heart.
10. Hearing God’s voice Keys- Peace, Conformation, Circumstance, Counsel, line up with God’s word.
1. Did you pray for someone you do not like this week? If so, how did your thinking change towards that individual?
When we pray we typically end our prayers with “In Jesus name, Amen”. Sometime I think that becomes normality and habit verses an expression of authority and power, and obedience.
2. Why do we pray “In Jesus name?”
Important reasons we pray “in Jesus name”:
John 14:13-21
12 The truth is, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the father.
13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. 14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

We can prove our devotion to Christ by obedience, including obedience in prayer. Obedience in prayer.
God will not grant request contrary to his promises. So the Holy Spirit helps us.
Praying “In Jesus name” alters our priorities and powerfully sends our request and praise to God.
By including the name of Jesus in prayer we acknowledge:
2 Corinthians 5:21
For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,[a] so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
He bore our sin, thank about that when you pray in his name and ask forgiveness from him.
Does that change the way you pray? Your priorities in pray?
3. What if we prayed backwards on occasion? What if we started our prayers with “In Jesus name”? How does that change things?
Example of authority, not passive, confession vs. plea.
How many times did a prayer end “In Jesus name” in the bible?
It’s not where we use his name, it’s how.
Amen means “Truly” or “I really mean this”, “so be it”. Certain. That which is true.
Jesus taught the disciples not to doubt when they prayed and to expect answers.
We pray in Jesus name because of our faith, we can be certain in his power.
Discernment-
You want to use the name of Jesus according to His word. This is why I am hesitant to bash anything anyone does in the name of the Lord.
Be careful. Unpardoable sin. Matthew 12:22-37 Phariseees attritudes the work of the holy Spirit to the devil.
Acts 19:13-16
13 A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this. 15 But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?” 16 Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered.
The authority in Jesus name was only granted to believers. Paul drove out demons in Jesus name by the power of the Holy Spirit, not witchcraft. No one can control or duplicate God’s power. God works his power through those he chooses.
Holy Spirit brings discernment through prayer.
Holy Spirit is a counselor. By work of the Holy Spirit, we are united with Jesus on a basis of His righteousness, that way we can approach His Holy throne in prayer.
Romans 8:34-36
34 Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.
35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death?
Think about this, Christ intercedes for us. Does this change the way you pray and use the name of Jeus? Are your priorities altered?
Hebrews 7:24-25
But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. 25 Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save[a] those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.
1 John 2:1
My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.
Christ is our advocate or mediator to God the Father. We pray to the father in the Son’s name. We have direct access to God with Jesus leading the way which brings us confidence.
Eph. 2:18-19
Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.
Holy Spirits role is big:
Why would someone not want to be a part of church that sought after the face of God? A church that prays is seeking the face of God. The leadership of Hope prays.
Why would individuals be satisfied with little or no prayer in their lives?
Lack of surrender. Control issues. They begin to dissolve with prayer.
Why would a church-goer be satisfied with just a knowledge of the Word but yet no Holy Ghost activity in their life?
Fear. Unknown. Not mature. Lack of prayer. Relationship.
Why would individuals look holy, and even come to church regularly, but never tap into the supernatural?
Story-
Many years ago there was a young man in India who while sitting during a lecture noticed an electric light in the room. This young man was so intrigued by this light that he asked if he could borrow the bulb, and the teacher obliged.
Days later the young man returned downcast for the bulb was useless, he said. So the teacher went to the young mans room and found the problem.
The innocent young man had taken the bulb and tied it with a piece of string to the ceiling of the room. He did not realize that he needed an electrical current to light the bulb.
How many people today in churches all across our city have a string with a light bulb attached to the ceiling?
Without the proper connection, THERE IS NO POWER!
Love is an attribute of God. And anyone can experience the love of God!
The Grace of God is extended to everyone… it doesn’t cost us a thing.
God’s Mercy free to all!
And when it comes to salvation Jesus Christ paid a price at Calvary!
But, the experiencing the Supernatural Presence of God IS NOT FREE!
IT COST SOMETHING!
GOD’S POWER ONLY COMES WHEN THE PRICE IS PRAYED!
John 15:26-16:14
But I will send you the Advocate[a]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. 27 And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate[b] won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
12 “There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can’t bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
Holy Spirit is counselor and Spirit of Truth.
Convinces world of its sin. Bringing Christ the Glory.
Revealing Christ standards
Demonstrating Christ judgement over satan.
When we pray in Jesus name, we are appealing to the Holy Spirit to confirm our prayers to help us, because it is the Holy Spirit that allows us to have direct access to God.
Another example of surrender.
By engaging the Holy Spirit through the use of Jesus name, we are acknowledging the limits of our own wisdom.
Romans 8:28
And we know that God causes everything to work together[a] for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.
1. The Holy Spirit becomes Christ’s instrument for intercession for us.
2. I can pray confidently, because I pray so weakly, but I know the H.S. strongly pleads on my behalf. The H.S. kindles the fervor lacking in my prayers.
We must understand and believe that-
All that is done in God’s name is for His glory:
Abraham calls on the name of the Lord.
Gen 21:33
Battles in OT, fought in His name
2 Chronicles 14:11
Priest’ minister in the name of the Lord
Duet. 18:7
Prophets speak
1 Kings 18:32
David fought Goliath
1 Samuel 17:45
Jesus cast out demons
Acts 16:18
Apostles exhort the church
1 Cor. 1:10
If all these things and all things done in God’s name, or the name of Jesus, for His glory, How does Jesus’ priorities and desires change our prayers?
We rarely know God desires or methods in relation to the outcome precisely.
If we would have been with Joseph, we would have prayed for the rescue from his brothers plot to sell him into slavery.
If we had been with Martha and Mary, we would have asked God to not let Lazarus die the first time.
If we were at the foot of the cross, we would have asked God to rescue Jesus.
In all these cases the Lord knew better to accomplish His will for His ultimate purpose.
His thoughts and ways are far above ours.
Isa. 55:9
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
When we pray, we offer our desires to God with the understanding that He will accomplish His purposed through us. By the H.S. that is what God does and that is why we are urged to pray in the Spirit.
Eph. 3:14-19
When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father,[a] 15 the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth.[b] 16 I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. 17 Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. 18 And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Eph. 6:18
Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.[a]
All prayer is literally every order of prayer and praying, the specific method by which spiritual warfare is carried on. We need the armor of God to fight against the fiery darts of the evil one. I need Holy Spirits help. Paul makes it clear the prayer in an unknown tongue is taught and directed by the Holy Spirit may combat the enemy in the battles of principalities and powers of darkness.
The focus of spiritual warfare is for the advancement of the gospel.
The H.S. ensures that no child of God is useless.
